Heat to 'squeeze'? This detail in the air conditioning can save you money on the light invoice

With the climb of temperatures, the air conditioner becomes almost indispensable in many houses. But between a fixed model and a laptop, the differences are not only measured in the purchase price. Costs of use, energy consumption, emissions and even noise can influence the choice, according to Deco Proteste.

The Consumer Protection Organization compared both types of equipment and found that for the same scenario of use (four hours a day, five days a week, during the three hottest months of the year), the portable air conditioner consumes more energy and costs more to function than a fixed model.

Costs and Environmental Impact

Deco Proteste tests show that fixed air conditioner has an average consumption of 179 kWh, which is equivalent to about 35 euros per year and 64 kg of CO₂ emissions. The laptop consumes 220 kWh, reflecting 44 euros annually and 79 kg of emissions.

The difference is around 10 euros per year, but for those who value energy efficiency and the reduction of environmental footprint, this disparity can be relevant.

Noise and portability: Not everything is how it seems

It is not only in consumption that differences arise. It stresses that most laptops are noisier, as the compressor is inside the device itself, unlike the fixed, where the noisiest component is abroad. At night or in work spaces, this can become inconvenient.

As for portability, the concept can be misleading. On average, these equipment weigh about 30 kg and are bulky. Although they include wheels, it is necessary to turn on an evacuation tube to a window and periodically empty the condensation deposit.

How they work

The process is simple: hot air is aspirated, cooled and dehumidified and then returned to the division. Heat is expelled outside through a flexible tube, usually installed with a own kit to avoid the reentry of hot air.

If the priority is only to improve air circulation, a fan connected ten hours a day can cost up to five euros per month, although it does not really cool the division.

At the time of purchase, consider not only the starting price, but also the cost of use and long-term comfort, can make a difference in your invoice and well-being during intense hot days.
