The president of Ukraine, thanked Monday at the White House for the letter that the first lady of the United States, sent to the president of Russia, defending the return of Ukrainian children deported to the neighboring country. “Thank you very much to your wife, the first lady of the United States. She sent a letter to Putin about our children. My wife, the first lady of Ukraine, handed this letter, not to you, but to your wife,” Zelensky said, delivering a letter of thanks to Trump at the beginning of the two in Washington.

Trump replied by saying that “the first lady felt it very deeply.” “She saw the same as you see, and what I see too. It’s horrible. She loves the children, has a wonderful child who probably loves more than anyone, even more than me – I hate to admit it,” he said. The US president added that “it was a very beautiful letter” and that it was “well received” by Putin. In the first lady letter, which was delivered at the meeting between Trump and Putin last Friday, Melania asked for the end of the war for the future of children who are immersed in the conflict and called on the awareness of leaders who have the possibility of making decisions.

In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Putin for the crimes of forced deportation and illegal transfer of Ukrainian children to territories occupied by Russia.
