Last year, a record 383 humanitarian workers died

The growth of death was taken care of by conflicts in the Gaza Strip, where 181 humanitarian workers were killed, and in Sudan, where they died 60. Most of the victims are local employees who attacked the service or in their homes. In addition, 308 humanitarian workers were injured last year, 125 kidnapped and 45 detained.

“Humanitarian workers must be respected and protected. They cannot be the target of attacks,” UN Secretary -General António Guterres said. “This rule is binding for all sides of the conflict, always and everywhere. Nevertheless, the red lines exceed impunity,” he added.

Preliminary data from the security database of humanitarian workers (AWSD) containing data since 1997 show that this year was killed by 265 humanitarian workers until 14 August.

18 Red Cross employees and the Red Crescent lost life

The international movement of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent said that 18 of its employees lost its vocation this year.

In this context, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that 1121 healthcare professionals and patients were killed last year in the attacks in 16 territories and hundreds of others suffered injuries. Most deaths were recorded in Sudan.

The World Humanitarian Day has been commemorating a tragic event of 2003 since 2008, when the UN Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 other humanitarian workers were killed in the UN Baghdad bomb attack.
