Bolsonaro’s defense says that penalty is disproportionate – 11/09/2025 – Power

The defense of the former president () stated that the penalties set by the first class of the (Supreme Federal Court) on Thursday (11) “are absurdly excessive and disproportionate” and will appeal, “including the international level”.

The former president was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison and the payment of 124 days-fine for attempted coup. The First Class of the Supreme Court also asked the Military Justice to loss of the patent of a retired army captain.

In the note, the lawyers of former President Celso Vilardi and Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno say they receive the STF’s decision “with respect”, but express “deep disagreement and outrage at the terms of the majority decision”.

“In this sense, we will continue to maintain that the former president did not attack the democratic state, never participated in any plan, let alone the acts that occurred on January 8,” they say.

“We also continue to understand that the former president should have been tried by the first instance or, if not, by the full Federal Supreme Court, in the same way, we cannot fail to say, with all due respect, that the lack of time to analyze the proof prevailed definitively.”
