The governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), reacted to the news of an investigation by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) into working conditions at the BYD factory in Camaçari (BA). “I trust BYD. We spoke yesterday, actions are being taken about what was reported”, he said.
Last weekend, it was the work of the construction workers, following a report of complaints published by Public Agency in November.
Rodrigues attended an event at the plant this Monday morning (2) with the Chief Minister of the Civil House and former governor of Bahia, Rui Costa. To the president of BYD for Europe and the Americas, Stella Li, the governor said that he could count on the support of the federal, state and municipal governments – president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Rodrigues and Luiz Caetano, elected mayor of Camaçari, share an acronym in Workers’ Party (PT).

“We are a governor and a president from a working class, a rural class, from poor families who know very well what good working conditions mean,” said Rodrigues.

How the company responds to the complaint
BYD took a stance on the incident, claiming that it identified non-conformities in relation to workers in Camaçari and demanded action from service providers.
“BYD respects Brazilian laws, it works within all municipal, state and federal legislation. Whether it be labor relations, environmental relations or commercial relations with companies that provide services”, said the company’s senior vice-president in Brazil, Alexandre Baldy.

The executive said that “no disrespect to working conditions, human relations and, above all, to the investments that are being made” is tolerated. According to Baldy, BYD sent minister Rui Costa a request to cancel the visas of people involved in the abuse incidents.
The MPT requested documents from both BYD and Chinese companies contracted to provide services for employees brought from China. The automaker says it must increase supervision, inviting other institutions to help “promote the commercial service provision contract”.
