Want to download the electricity bill? See how to choose the right fare and start saving monthly

Managing a family budget is not simple, especially when fixed expenses increase constantly. Among the accounts that most worry Portuguese families are electricity. The good news is that there is savings margin if you choose the proper tariff for your consumer habits.

How electricity rates work

The price of electricity varies depending on the time and the day it is used. During the most demand periods, such as late afternoon or dinner time, the energy is more expensive. Already at night and dawn, when low consumption, electricity becomes cheaper.

According to the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE), consumers with hired power up to 41.4 kVA can opt for three types of tariffs: simple, bi-hourly and tri-hourly.

The differences between simple, bi-hour and tri-horear

In the simple rate, the price remains constant at all hours. It is a practical option for those who cannot adjust consumption to specific hours.

Bi-hourly tariff divides the day into two periods: empty, when electricity is cheaper, and out of emptiness, where it is more expensive. It is suitable for families who can transfer some tasks, such as washing clothes or dishes, to the night.

The tri-hourly tariff establishes three periods: tip (more expensive), full (intermediate price) and empty (cheaper). It requires greater adaptation, but can generate significant savings if the consumption is well distributed.

Daily or weekly cycle

In addition to choosing the fare, the consumer can define the count cycle. In the daily cycle, the schedules remain equal every day of the year. In the weekly, they vary between business days, weekends and even seasons. For example, in a weekly bi-hourly cycle, emptiness hours are more extensive on Saturday and Sunday, which may be advantageous for those who concentrate consumption these days.

Compare

According to ERSE, the best fare is always the one that adapts to aggregate habits. Those who use appliances especially at night can benefit from a bi-hourly. Those who have the highest consumption at the weekend can make the most of the weekly cycle.

To choose the most appropriate option, you can use the simulator, which allows you to compare the offers available on the market. Change of fare has no costs and can be requested directly from the supplier, even if the counter adaptation is required.

A decision that can reduce the invoice

Knowing tariffs and realizing how they fit your consumer profile is a key step in paying less every month. With minor changes in daily habits and the right tariff, savings in the electricity bill can become a reality.
