Arne Slot confirmed a moving Liverpool gesture after Diogo Jota’s death. The Dutch coach told, in an interview with TNT Sports, that the club decided to fully pay the remaining amount of the Portuguese striker’s contract, valid until 2027, to his family.
The news had already been advanced by various media, but had never been confirmed by anyone linked to the club or family so far.
Slot highlighted the club’s sensitivity and humanity in the face of mourning: “The fans, the flowers, the memorials … I am almost thrilled to remember. When we returned to training, we only thought of the pain of Diogo’s wife and children.”
The coach also stressed that the decision of the owners of liquidating the whole contract was a rare gesture in the world of football: “many will think it is normal in football, but it is not. It was a truly exceptional attitude.”
