The PS became the second most voted party, with the PSD winning 136 chambers, alone or in coalitions, and taking the presidency of the National Association of Municipalities away from the socialists. Chega failed to achieve its objectives and received just over 600 thousand votes, when in the legislative elections it had reached 1.4 million. The CDU records the worst result ever.
PSD gains 136 cameras
The PSD, alone or in coalitions with various forces, was the party with the most elected mayors, 136. With this result, it wins the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP).
PS became second party
The PS was, since 2021, the first local party, but lost that place. Alone, the PS won 126 chambers. And he managed two more in coalition with Livre and PAN.
20 cameras for citizen groups
Citizens’ Groups won the presidency of 20 chambers, one more than in 2021.
CDU with the worst result ever
The CDU obtained its worst result ever. It won only 12 municipal councils and lost the two district capitals it held — Évora and Setúbal.
Enough gets three cameras
After being the second party in the May legislatures, Chega managed to elect three mayors.
- São Vicente (Madeira)
- Albufeira (Algarve)
- Entroncamento (district of Santarém).
It received just over 600,000 votes, whereas in the legislative elections it had reached 1.4 million votes.
CDS remains the fourth municipal party
The CDS-PP continues to be the fourth party with the most mayors, six elected on its own lists and one more in coalition with the PSD. The CDS ran alone for 43 municipal councils and in coalition with the PSD, a government partner, and other parties in around 150 municipalities.
PSD ahead of six of the ten most populous municipalities
Coalitions that brought together PSD, CDS-PP and other parties were ahead in six of the 10 largest municipalities in terms of number of inhabitants — Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Cascais and Braga.
The PS won the rest: Loures, Almada, Amadora and Matosinhos.
40.74% abstention
Abstention in Sunday’s local elections stood at 40.74%, according to provisional data from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
It was the lowest since 2005, more than five percentage points below the figure recorded four years ago.
