Contrary to appearances, there is no shortage of work in the garden in autumn. Now is the time to sow vegetables that can cope with lower temperatures. Thanks to this, we will be able to enjoy earlier harvests. Therefore, it is worth knowing what species can be sown in October.
It is worth taking advantage of natural conditions in autumn, i.e. warm and moist soil, to sow seeds. In this way, we will ensure that the seeds do not germinate, but undergo stratification, which will allow them to start faster in spring. Plants that can be sown now include:
- Garlic – by starting its cultivation in October, we will ensure that it develops a strong root system before the arrival of winter. Then we will be able to collect it in June.
- Rosponka – sown now, it will have time to emerge before winter. After the first thaw, it will start growing again.
- Sea bluefish – this plant is also suitable for autumn sowing because it is resistant to frost. By sowing it in October, we can harvest crops already in March.
- Garden dill – the seeds of this plant can survive the winter without any problems. We will be able to collect the first bunches in April.
- Spinach – sown in autumn, it will not freeze and in spring it will grow much faster than spinach sown in March.
Therefore, it is worth taking care of the development of your vegetable garden in autumn, because sowing in this period can speed up the harvest by up to a month compared to spring . Therefore, this method will allow us to start the season faster and will also reduce the amount of work in spring, which is then too much. This will relieve us a bit when the warm days come.

If we want to sow plants in autumn, we must ensure a suitable location for our specimens. It’s best to choose a sunny place and sheltered from the wind. It is good for the site to be slightly elevated so that spring thaws do not cause water to stand near the roots and cause them to rot.
It is also worth paying attention to: sow plants in fertile, humus and well-drained soilbecause it heats up faster and accelerates the emergence of specimens. We should also avoid too heavy, compact soil, which may retain water and impede seed germination.
However, before we start sowing, the selected site should be thoroughly cleaned of plant remains, weeds and stones. After cleaning it, it is a good idea to gently loosen the top layer of soiland, which will facilitate the roots’ access to air and nutrients.
