Some words seem simple, but they deceive many people because of a small detail: the accent.

And that is precisely why so many make mistakes when writing.

Even those who have a good command of Portuguese sometimes forget that certain words require graphic accents, which completely changes the pronunciation and even the meaning.

10 words that have an accent and that most people forget to put

1. Soil

This is one of the most forgotten words when it comes to accent.

“Pôde”, with a circumflex accent, is the past tense of “may”. Writing without an accent completely changes the tense and meaning of the sentence.

2. That

Simple, but often misspelled.

“Pé” always has an acute accent, and its absence is a spelling error.

3. Come

Another common confusion. “Vêm”, with an accent, is the plural form of the verb vir (they/they come).

Without an accent, it becomes “come”, in the singular.

4. Grandmother

Many people write “avo” and don’t even notice the error. “Grandmother”, with an acute accent, is the mother’s mother or father’s mother.

“Avo” (without accent) means dividing something into smaller parts.

5. You

One of the most used words in the Portuguese language and yet, many forget the accent.

“Você” has a circumflex accent on the “ê” and should never be written as “voce”.

6. Have

Just like “come”, “have” is also plural. It is the form of the verb ter used for “they have”.

Without the accent, it is “has”, in the singular.

7. Only

Many think that the accent of “só” dropped with the new spelling agreement, but that’s not the case.

It continues to exist when the word has the meaning of “only” and there is a risk of ambiguity.

8. Indian

Another common mistake is writing “indio” without an accent.

The correct option is “Indian”, with an acute accent, to mark the stress of the first syllable.

9. Café

Although it seems obvious, many people end up forgetting the accent when typing quickly.

“Café” always has an acute accent on the “é”.

10. Hero

Finally, “hero” also makes the list.

Writing “hero” without an accent is a mistake, since the acute accent indicates the stress and correct pronunciation of the word.
