Prison explosion: number of prisoners in Acre shoots up 45% in one year and exceeds 8 thousand

For some years now, Acre’s prison system has faced a critical situation regarding cell overcrowding. The Situational Analysis Panel of the Public Ministry of the State of Acre (MPAC), based on data from the Institute of Penitentiary Administration of Acre (Iapen), reveals that the number of inmates in the state increased by 45% in just one year.

The numbers, referring to September 2025, show that 8,455 people are serving sentences in Acre prisons. The increase is significant when compared to the same period of the previous year, when 5,490 people were imprisoned.

This is the biggest increase in the number of inmates recorded in the last eight years. SEE THE GRAPHIC BELOW:

Another point that raises concern is the fact that, between 2019 and 2024, the number of people in prison had been falling, but a sudden increase was recorded this year.

In 2024, the total number of vacancies offered was 5,490. In 2025, the number rose to 7,280, still far below the total number of inmates. The vacancy deficit reaches 2,047.

Profile of inmates in Acre

According to the survey on the age range of prisoners in the state, the majority (26.62%) are between 25 and 29 years old. The second largest portion is between 18 and 24 years old.

Of the total, 7,505 inmates (93.52%) are male, while 520 (6.48%) are female.

The majority of inmates are mixed race (82.92%). The second largest group is made up of black people (7.53%), followed by white people (0.94%). The rest fall into the yellow, indigenous or uninformed categories.

In relation to education, 48.94% of inmates have incomplete primary education. Another 15.61% have incomplete secondary education, and only 10.77% managed to complete it. The third largest portion is made up of people with complete primary education.

Regarding marital status, 62.2% of prisoners are single, 23.82% live in a stable union and 11.09% are married.

Foreign prisoners

The panel also provides information about the origins of people serving sentences in Acre prisons. Among the foreign detainees, 16 are from Peru, 5 from Colombia and 4 from Bolivia. There are also prisoners from Sierra Leone, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain and Portugal, with one case of each nationality.
