An underground greenhouse is a solution that combines simplicity with efficiency and an ecological approach to gardening. This is also why walipini is gaining popularity in our climate.

Walipini is an underground greenhouse, the concept of which was born in South America. Alone the name comes from the Aymara language and means “warm place”. It couldn’t be more accurate – after all, walipini uses the natural heat of the earth to maintain a stable temperature inside. Thanks to this, it is possible to cultivate crops practically all year round, without the need to heat the interior.

Unlike traditional greenhouses, which are above ground, walipini are built underground, usually on 2-3 meters deep. This allows you to take advantage of the natural insulation of the ground and protect plants against frost, wind and excessive heat.

The main advantage of walipini is energy efficiency. The earth acts as a natural thermal buffer — stores heat during the day and releases it at night. Thanks to this, there is a stable microclimate inside, conducive to the growth of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Underground greenhouses are perfect for temperate climates, such as in Poland. They allow you to grow plants that would not normally survive the winter, and at the same time protect your crops from winter wind i sudden temperature changes. The secret is in the design. The trench is several meters deep thermal insulation functionand the transparent roof allows sunlight necessary for photosynthesis to pass through. A well-designed air exchange system allows you to avoid excessive humidity, which could lead to the development of mold and plant diseases. Before you start working, choose a suitable place. The area should be well sunny, dry and stablepreferably away from water bodies. A 2-3 meter deep trench can be secured with concrete slabs, stones or wood to strengthen the structure. It is worth designing the roof with a slope of about 20-30 degrees to make the best use of sunlight. After installing the transparent covering, ensure ventilation. All you need are holes placed in the lower and upper parts of the structure, which will ensure natural air flow.
