A section of a recently opened bridge in southwest China’s Sichuan province, which formed part of a highway connecting the country’s interior with the Tibet Autonomous Region, collapsed on Tuesday, local authorities said. No casualties were reported, TASR writes, according to a Reuters report.
Police in the city of Ma-er-khang (Barkam) closed the 758-meter-long Chungchi Bridge to all traffic on Monday afternoon after how cracks appeared on nearby slopes and roads and shifts were noted on the adjacent mountain terrain, said the local government.
On Tuesday afternoon, conditions on the mountainside worsened, triggering landslides that led to the collapse of the access bridge and roadbedthe municipality added. Construction of the bridge was completed earlier this year, according to information posted on social media by construction firm Sichuan Road & Bridge Group.
