Lula says he demanded peace from Trump in Latin America

President states that he rejected the idea of conflict in the region in conversation with the North American; speech was made after the connection with Maduro was revealed

The president (PT) stated this Wednesday (Dec 11, 2025) that he reinforced to the American president (Republican) that Latin America must remain a “peace zone”. The statement was made after it became public that Lula spoke by telephone with Nicolás Maduro to discuss regional stability.

I told Trump, we don’t want war in Latin America. We are a zone of peace”, stated the president during an event in Minas Gerais.

Lula also said he challenged the military logic defended by the republican.“I believe more in the power of words than in the power of weapons. Let’s try to use words as an instrument of persuasion, of persuasion for us to do the right things”, he declared.

According to the president, the North American defended the military superiority of the United States, but heard from him that Brazil is betting on a diplomatic solution. According to the PT member, Trump insisted that “has more weapons, more ships and more bombs”.

Let’s believe that words are, diplomatically, the strongest thing we have to solve problems”, defended the Brazilian president.

Last week, Lula spoke with Maduro about the political situation in Latin America and the Caribbean. The 2 discussed initiatives to “preserve regional peace”.

According to Planalto’s interlocutors, Lula and Maduro had not yet spoken directly this year. The conversation sought to ease noise between Brasília and Caracas and reinforce stability commitments.

The call was anticipated by The Globe and confirmed by Poder360. The Brazilian government did not release an official statement about the phone call.

The Venezuelan scenario worsened after Trump raised his tone against the Maduro regime, suggesting expanding military actions and celebrating recent attacks in the Caribbean. US operations have been criticized by international organizations and treated by Lula’s advisors as a risk of destabilization in the region.
