Kosovo plans to receive 50 deportees annually
“We are accepting those who the United States does not want on its territory,” Kurti said Thursday evening, adding that “one or two migrants” had already arrived in Kosovo.
In June, Kosovo’s government agreed to a request from the United States to accept deported migrants. At the time, Pristina said that it plans to accept 50 deportees per year.
Kosovo has already concluded a similar agreement with Denmark, and from 2027 it should start accepting 300 prisoners from Danish prisons, for which it will receive 210 million euros. It also expressed an interest in accepting deportees from Britain.
The US is looking for partners who would be willing to accept deportees
Reuters reminds that the government of US President Donald Trump is looking for partners on the international scene who would be willing to accept deported persons from the US. In doing so, he is trying to fulfill his pre-election promises and deport a record number of illegal migrants.
In addition, relations between Kosovo and the USA are very close, as Washington was the main supporter of Kosovo’s independence from Serbia in 2008. The independence of Kosovo, with its majority Albanian population, is also recognized by most EU states, with the exception of Slovakia, Romania, Spain, Romania and Cyprus.
