Lula praises the economy and says that taxation of the rich will compensate for the IR exemption

At an event in Brasília, the president once again confirms tax benefits for those earning up to R$5,000 in 2026 and announces the expansion of the health program for the election year

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio da Silva, boasted this Friday (12) the economic numbers during a speech in . According to the PT member, the Brazilian moment is special due to the reduction in extreme poverty and unemployment, in addition to the growth in formal jobs. Lula also highlighted the exemption of those who earn up to R$5,000 from , and stated that the richest will compensate for the “liberation of poor people” from taxation.

“We are making progress in the fight against tax justice. From January 2026, anyone who earns up to R$5,000 will no longer pay income tax in this country, and anyone who earns up to R$7,300 will pay less tax than they pay today. The compensation for this liberation of poor people from paying income tax will come from the taxation we are imposing on the richest layer of the population,” said Lula.

The president also said that it is only necessary to “elect someone who is no good” to destroy a public policy. According to the PT member, the State needs to reach out to the population, and not the other way around.

Lula announced that, next year, the government will try to carry out three collective efforts per month of vehicles and equipment from the Agora Tem Especialistas program for . The initiative is one of the PT’s bets to boost the management’s popularity ahead of the arrival of the electoral campaign.

The president participated this Friday morning in the 13th National Conference on Human Rights, in Brasília. After the event, Lula left for , where he will participate, in the late afternoon, in the inauguration of the channel SBT News.

Lula sent a message to the National Congress of the Inter-American Convention Against Forms of Discrimination and Tolerance. Therefore, the Legislature needs to ratify the text so that Brazil follows the precepts adopted by the continent.
