The statement was made at the closing of the 13th National Conference on Human Rights (ConDH), in Brasília
The president (PT) stated this Friday (12) that digital platforms need to take responsibility for the dissemination of “hate speech and encouragement of violence against women”. According to him, holding this type of content responsible is not about censorship. The statement was made at the end of the 13th National Conference on Human Rights (ConDH), in.
“Digital networks need to be held responsible for the systematic publication of hate speech and encouragement of violence against women. Freedom of expression cannot be confused with complicity in the commission of heinous crimes. Protecting the life, physical integrity and dignity of girls and women is not censorship”, he stated.
The president also informed that he intends to meet, next week, with authorities to discuss new actions to combat violence against women. The proposal is for the meeting to bring together representatives from the STJ, PGR and the National Congress.
During the ceremony, the government signed the bill establishing the National Plan for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, which will now be analyzed by the Legislature. Lula highlighted that the country is among those that record the most deaths of people who work in defense of these rights.
The president also criticized the advance of far-right movements on the international scene, stating that this has driven an unprecedented wave of denial of humanitarian values. He mentioned that, in Brazil, discriminatory practices continue to reproduce historical problems, such as machismo and racism. “They are not content to discriminate, they try to silence the voices of those on the front line at all costs,” he declared.
The ConDH has not been held since 2016. According to the government, the resumption of the conference seeks to restore a plural and democratic space for debate, aimed at building guidelines to strengthen a more efficient and structured National Human Rights System.
