From January 1, 2025, Slovaks will be expecting a change in the prices of their favorite soft drinks. The new excise tax on sugary drinks will raise the price of cola drinks, energy drinks and syrups, while milk and protein drinks will be exempt. What exactly does this mean for the average consumer?

Sugar tax: Which drinks will become more expensive?

The National Council of the Slovak Republic has approved legislation that introduces a tax on drinks with added sugar or sweeteners. The new rules will apply from January 2025 and concern packaged soft drinks, syrups and energy drinks. Consumption tax will vary according to the type and form of the drink. For example, cola drinks and flavored mineral water will have a tax of €0.15 per litre, while highly caffeinated energy drinks will pay up to €0.30 per litre.

Syrups and instant drinks: The highest tax in history?

Concentrated drinks, such as syrups and instant powders, will bear the highest tax. Liquid concentrates will be taxed at the rate of 1.05 euros per literwhile solid powder products, such as instant coffee or sparkling drinks, can reach a rate of up to 4.30 euros per kilogramif they do not contain precise preparation instructions.

Who will be the exception?

Not all products increase in price. Milk and yogurt drinks, as well as plant-based milk alternatives, will be exempt from the tax. They will also be an exception medicines and nutritional supplements, such as effervescent vitamin tablets or protein drinks. On the contrary, packaged iced coffees and teas, even those with herbal alternatives, will be taxed.

The state promises millions, the consumer higher prices

The Ministry of Finance expects an annual yield of more than 79 million euros. Although the goal is to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks, many consumers worry that higher prices will hit their budgets.
