Arrested for killing CEO, Luigi Mangione is heir to an empire and shocks millionaire family

Luigi Mangioneaccused of murdering Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare — the largest health insurer in the United States —, is a member of a traditional Italian-American family from Baltimore, known for its real estate empire and generous donations to healthcare institutions.

Mangione was arrested last Monday (11) at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. During the approach, he carried a handwritten manifesto criticizing the health sector for prioritizing profits over patient care, according to police information. The motivation for the crime remains under investigation.

The Mangione family, dubbed “Baltimore royalty” by the local press, built their fortune in real estate, focusing on building resorts, clubs and nursing homes in the region. The patriarch, Nick Mangione, left Italy during his childhood and faced economic hardship before prospering in the United States.

“I didn’t have two pennies to rub together when my father died when I was 11, but I still became a millionaire,” Nick told Baltimore Sun in an interview in the past.

Nick and his wife, Mary, became well-known philanthropists through the Mangione Family Foundation. Their donations include more than $1 million to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center — where the couple’s 37 grandchildren were born — as well as significant contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the University-affiliated St. Joseph Medical Center of Maryland.

Luigi Mangione’s family reacted to the arrest with a public statement released on the profile of Nino Mangione, a member of the clan. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to Brian Thompson’s family and ask that people pray for everyone involved,” the statement said.
