Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev visited China.
Beijing is willing to strengthen its relations with Moscow, Chinese President Xi Jinping told former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, who has been on a two-day working visit to China since Wednesday. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
“China is willing to work with Russia to strengthen the alignment of development strategies,” the Chinese leader was quoted as saying by China’s state television CCTV. He said Beijing hopes to harness the “driving force of cooperation between the two countries” that will continue to benefit both countries and their inhabitants.
Strengthening cooperation
Xi Jinping also said that China and Russia “should strengthen their communication and cooperation” within multilateral groupings such as the UN, BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, China has outwardly tried to appear neutral in relation to this war, unlike the Western powers that are helping Kiev. Beijing never condemned the Russian invasion and at the same time remained a close political and economic partner of Moscow, which led several NATO members to call it a “supporter” of the war.
Medvedev plays only a minor role in Russian politics, while currently he is visible mainly through sharp verbal outbursts against the West, which he publishes on social networks. He last visited China in December 2022.
According to the Russian TASS agency, Xi Jinping expressed his belief that Medvedev’s current visit will strengthen mutual trust between the two countries. He also stated that the three meetings he had already this year with Russian President Vladimir Putin led to the strengthening of bilateral relations.
