Russian bombing with drones and missiles left dead, injured and power cuts in Kiev; this Sunday (28), Ukrainian leader will meet with Donald Trump
The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, condemned this Saturday (27) the new Russian attacks against Kiev, classifying them as “barbarism”, and stated that any peace agreement in Ukraine will only be possible with a “Russia willing” to cooperate. The statement was made during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky in Halifax.
“We have the conditions for a just and lasting peace, but this requires a willing Russia. The barbarity we saw last night demonstrates how important it is for us to stand by Ukraine,” said Carney. Zelensky stopped in Canada on his way to Florida, where he is scheduled to meet this Sunday (28) with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to continue negotiations on a plan to end the war, which has lasted almost four years.
Still in Halifax, the Ukrainian president is expected to participate in a video conference with European leaders before continuing his trip to the United States. He said he hoped the meeting with Trump, on a new 20-point plan to end the conflict, would be “very constructive.”
Zelensky said the roughly 10-hour bombing of Kiev and neighboring regions, which took place during the early hours of the morning, was “Russia’s response to our peace efforts.” “This clearly demonstrates that Putin does not want peace, while we do,” he declared.
According to Ukrainian authorities, around 500 drones and 40 missiles hit the capital and its surroundings, leaving at least two dead, dozens injured and causing cuts in the supply of electricity and heating to hundreds of thousands of people, amid extremely low temperatures.
During the meeting, Carney also announced a new economic aid package of 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (about R$10.1 billion) for Ukraine. According to him, the resources should help unlock international financing aimed at rebuilding the country.
