Most people are no stranger to skin cancer screenings. Skin changes such as moles are visually examined by a dermatologist; if there are any abnormalities, a biopsy is carried out and the tissue is analyzed histologically. The melanoma is usually completely removed surgically. However, this method is not infallible; in some cases, carcinomas are only diagnosed at an advanced stage. This can have fatal consequences. As soon as the tumor metastasizes, treatment becomes very difficult – metastases become increasingly resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which is why the chances of survival then fall drastically.
