Throughout the exhibition, Taís Araújo expressed her dissatisfaction with the direction that Manuela Dias took for her character, Raquel Acioli, including, mainly, a return to poverty after the protagonist had risen professionally in the culinary field.
Even after the end of the plot, the actress filed a complaint against the author with the Rio de Janeiro broadcaster’s compliance department, according to information from Folha de São Paulo.
According to the publication, the disagreement between the two would have started in August, when Taís sought out the author with the intention of talking about the character’s development. At the time, she argued that “Raquel was another black protagonist written to suffer too much.”
Taís also reported pressure from entities in the black movement of which he is a part, who were disappointed with the representation of his character in the serial. Manuela reportedly disagreed with the idea, causing a “strong discussion” of a professional nature.
Manuela allegedly also filed a complaint against Araújo, alleging a breach of the company’s ethical code, in addition to denying the discomfort since the actress raised the racial issue publicly. Since then, the two have not been speaking to each other.
In a note to CNNthe company’s communication reinforced the “pride in production” and “the commitment to diversity in its works”.
“Globo is very proud of the remake of ‘Vale Tudo’, shown recently. The soap opera has already entered the history of Brazilian dramaturgy and is a successful example of updating a great work from the past. ‘Vale Tudo’ also reinforces the entire Globo’s commitment to diversity”, he declared.
