Former president is hospitalized in Brasília; this nine-day hospitalization was his first outing since serving time at the PF Superintendence
The former president’s defense asked this Wednesday (31) that the former president be allowed to serve his sentence at home due to a “concrete risk of worsening” of his health, after he spent more than a week hospitalized in Brasília. “The stay of this patient in a prison establishment, as soon as he is discharged from hospital, would put him at a concrete risk of sudden worsening of his health condition”, says the petition.
In September, the STF sentenced the former president to 27 years in prison for leading a frustrated plan to stay in power, after losing the elections to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), in 2022. Bolsonaro, 70 years old, underwent surgery on December 25 for an inguinal hernia and then underwent a procedure against his recurring bouts of hiccups. Doctors informed this Wednesday that he is expected to return to his cell at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasília on Thursday (1st).
Imprisoned since November, the former president (2019-2022) has been facing for years the consequences of a stab wound he suffered in the stomach during a campaign event in 2018, which required him to undergo several surgeries. This nine-day hospitalization was his first outing since serving time at the PF Superintendence in Brasília. “Criminal execution cannot — and should not — become an instrument of undue exposure of the prisoner to relevant and avoidable medical risks”, argue the lawyers in the petition.
