“Avatar: Fire and Ashes” surpasses $1 billion at the global box office

James Cameron’s science fiction, Avatar: Fire and Ashsurpassed the US$1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the director’s fourth film to reach this milestone.

The film, which transports audiences back to the stunning planet Pandora, grossed US$1.03 billion in ticket sales, as reported by Walt Disney Studios last Sunday.

Fire and Ashes is the third film in the series Avatarwhich has already accumulated a total of US$6.35 billion in global box office. The plot continues the events of Avatar: The Path of Waterwith Jake and Neytiri facing grief over the loss of a child.

The first film in the franchise, Avatarreleased in 2009, grossed US$2.9 billion at the global box office, consolidating itself as the highest-grossing film of all time in absolute terms, according to Comscore. However, adjusting for inflation and average ticket prices over the decades, the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind still leads.

Thirteen years after the release of the first film, in 2022, Avatar: The Path of Water arrived in theaters, grossing more than US$2.3 billion and winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

The latest chapter in the saga, strategically released for the holiday season, has already grossed US$306 million in the United States and Canada, in addition to US$777.1 million in the international market, according to Disney.

James Cameron’s first blockbuster to surpass the $1 billion mark was Titanicreleased in 1997, which racked up nearly $2.3 billion at the global box office.
