According to the EU, the right time has not yet come for negotiations with Putin on Ukraine: We do not even see signs…

The European Union emphasized on Monday that conditions are not yet suitable for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine. In this way, she reacted to the statement of the representatives of Italy and France, according to which the time has come for the re-engagement of the EU in peace negotiations. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

  • The EU emphasized that the conditions for negotiations with Putin on Ukraine are not yet in place.
  • Italy and France called for renewed EU dialogue with Russia.
  • The European Commission claims that Putin is not yet involved in the peace process.
  • Italian Prime Minister Meloni suggested appointing a special envoy for negotiations.
  • The calls for dialogue come at a time when Europe and the US are trying to end the war.

“At some point, negotiations will have to take place, including with President Putin. In the meantime, there is a lot of work being done. Unfortunately, we see no signs of President Putin engaging in this process,” said European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinhová. “We haven’t gotten there yet, well we will hope that one day such negotiations will take place and finally lead to peace in Ukraine“, she added.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday that “the time has come” to resume high-level dialogue with Russia. She also pointed out that a special envoy could also be appointed for negotiations on Ukraine. Even in December, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Europe should try to find a way to engage with the Kremlin in the coming weeks. The calls of both politicians came at a time when Europe is intensively trying to end the war with the help of the US.
