Anatoly Trubin, SL Benfica’s goalkeeper, scored at 90+8 the goal that guaranteed the Reds’ stay in the Champions League.
He is the 2nd Benfica goalkeeper to score (also in the Champions League) but this madness hasn’t happened in almost 50 years and, definitely, it has never happened like this. Anatoly Trubin is also the first goalkeeper to score for Real Madrid in European competitions.
With great emotion, Benfica ensured their presence in the play-off to access the round of 16 of the Champions League this Wednesday, against the colossal Real Madrid, in a completely chaotic outcome, but much more than that, highly unlikely.
The calculator got tired at the end of this up-and-down. José Mourinho’s men entered the field knowing that it would be difficult to stay in the competition, as they were facing Real Madrid, they needed to win and, even if they did, nothing was guaranteed.
Benfica entered the field losing, conceded a goal and started to lose on the scoreboard; they equalized quickly and went into half-time leading 2-1. Schjelderup (hero of the night alongside Trubin) gives Benfica a two-goal lead but, four minutes later, Kylian Mbappé scores twice to make it 3-2. With half an hour to go, the Benfica just needed help from… Sportingwho at this time were tied in Spain against Athletic Bilbao and needed to win to make their rival happy.
. In stoppage time, Benfica was equal on points with Marseille, Paphos and St. Gilloise, all with identical negative goal difference. When this is the case, the tie is broken based on goals scored, with Marseille having an advantage. A Benfica goal would change everything for the good of Benfica fans.
Mourinho admitted he was not up to speed and even launched António Silva to reinforce the defense and hold on for 3-2. Trubin has the ball in his hands at 90+7, ‘ready’ to throw it to Ivanovic, but he doesn’t, with his teammates already aware that Benfica was missing a goal.
But this match was like a final, and finals, as the coach says, are about winning. True to his philosophy, Mourinho, with a free kick at 90+8, sends Trubin up to the area and the Ukrainian goalkeeper does this:
Ladies and gentlemen, Trubin was a hero 🔥

“I didn’t realize what we needed. Or Thomas [Araújo] and Antonio [Silva] they said ‘one, one’, and I said: ‘What?’. But then I saw everyone telling me to go up. I also saw the manager, so I went up, went to the area and I don’t know… I don’t know what to say. Crazy moment”, Trubin later said, quoted by pel’.
“I don’t know what to say. I’m not used to scoring. I’m 24 years old and it’s the first time. Unbelievable”, said the Ukrainian.
It was legendary. The historic incarnate guardian Bento had already done itin the 1977/78 season, in Russia, against Torpedo Moscow, but in the penalty shoot-out (1-4), after the game ended 0-0.
Samuel Soares kind of did it too, or was (officially) very close to it not long ago, in a running game, but it was at Benfica B: a great goal, against Trofense, in November 2022, if the long-range shot wasn’t attributed as an own goal by Miguel Santos.
And how many goalkeepers have scored against Real Madrid? Just Trubin and one other — 119 years ago.
The shot put winner Manuel Valbuena scored, in 1907, in the Copa del Rey, against Madrid FC (the name of Real Madrid at that time), in a “memorable move”, recalls . “He controlled the ball inside his own area, dribbled towards the opponent’s goal and scored, although this did not prevent his team from losing 4-2”, reads the publication.
However, Anatoly Trubin is the first to score in European competitions against the greatest champions of the Champions League. It is also the fifth goalkeeper in history to score in the Champions Leaguealong with ex-Benfica Hans-Jorg , Ivan , Sinan (who scored in a very similar way to Trubin) and Vincent .
