Trump announced 25% protectionist tariffs against Brazil
Until the end of last week, Flávio Bolsonaro’s visit to Donald Trump was seen as a great political strategy to take the focus off the leaked audios between the senator and banker Daniel Vorcaro.
The meeting went better than expected, as, days later, Trump classified the Red Command and the PCC as terrorist organizations. Flávio Bolsonaro explored the issue politically well, selling the idea that he had interfered in the American president’s decision, which was mostly supported by the Brazilian population. In popular perception, the USA could bring some benefit to Brazilian public security.
Everything was going very well for the senator until this week. On Monday (01), Trump announces 25% protectionist tariffs against Brazil. Of course, Flávio Bolsonaro had nothing to do with this, but the timing of his visit didn’t help.
In the same way that he was positively associated with the measure of classifying criminal organizations as terrorists, now, the left links the senator to Trump’s new tariff.
If the past is a good guide, Flávio Bolsonaro must vehemently reject the North American decision so that Lula does not politically exploit the discourse of sovereignty interference as he did last year and gave him a rise in the electoral polls.
At these times, it is important for the senator to look up to Tarcísio, who immediately moved away from the issue, learning from his past mistakes.
