German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on European allies in Berlin on Thursday to act unitedly and confidently, because according to him, only then can Europe assert its ideas and become an independent power in the nascent new world order. TASR informs.
In a government statement delivered to the members of the Bundestag, he said that the great powers are creating a new world order and it is happening fast.
New opportunities for Europe
“In recent weeks, we see more and more clearly that world powers have begun to reshape the world. There is a harsh wind blowing in this world, and we will feel it in the foreseeable future. However, we also see more and more clearly where these changes bring us new opportunities, new chances for our country, but also, above all, new opportunities for us in Europe,” emphasized Merz. At the same time, he stated that Europe has a lot to offer its partners all over the world economically, but especially in the area of ideological values.
The Chancellor underlined three areas on which, according to him, Europe should focus: it must take its security into its own hands, the economy must become more competitive and Europe must act unitedly.
Locked Europe
In this context, in view of the conflict around Greenland, he pointed out that Europe has proven in recent weeks that it can act unitedly. “Lockdown is a power factor in the world,” he said. This growing self-confidence of Europeans should be used by the inhabitants of the old continent.
Merz took a sharper tone towards US President Donald Trump, DPA noticed. For example, he harshly criticized the words of the head of the White House that the US never needed NATO troops in Afghanistan. “We will not allow this mission, in which we also participated in the interests of our ally the United States, to be despised and belittled,” DPA quotes from the German Chancellor’s government statement.
