“Respecting all Portuguese”, former head of state opts for Seguro. Admiral in reserve too, considering that his opponent, André Ventura, seeks above all to assert himself as a governing alternative.

The former President of the Republic António Ramalho Eanes This Thursday, he declared his support for presidential candidate António José Seguro, with whom he identifies “in democratic thinking” and shares his understanding of competencies and the exercise of the role of head of state.

Ramalho Eanes received Seguro in his office, in Lisbon, and, in a note to the Lusa agency, stated that, “respecting all Portuguese”, even those who do not understand democracy in the same wayexpressed “support for António José Seguro for the role of President of the Republic”.

“And I do so because I consider that a presidential candidate who, repeatedly, defends the importance of the cohesion of society and ‘dignity’, in a country ‘where no one is left behind’ – as António José Seguro has mentioned – is, clearly, a Portuguese with whom I identify in democratic thought”, he explained.

According to the former President of the Republic, this “identification in democratic thought” is even “further deepened” by the “shared understanding of the powers and exercise of the role of President of the Portuguese Republic”.

General António Ramalho Eanes was, in the 1976 presidential elections, the first democratically elected President of the Republic after the Revolution of April 25, 1974. He is often considered by the Portuguese as head of State in the democratic era.

Gouveia e Melo “useful vote” on Insurance

On the other hand, former presidential candidate Gouveia e Melo announced that he will vote “usefully” for António José Seguro in the second round, considering that his opponent, André Ventura, is mainly seeking to assert himself as a governing alternative.

“Evaluating the positioning of the candidates, and in the conviction that one seeks to assert itself above all as a government alternative, my useful vote will be for Dr. António José Seguro”, writes Henrique Gouveia e Melo, who came fourth in the first round, in a note he sent to the Lusa agency.

The retired admiral never writes the name of Chega’s leader, André Ventura, on the note and only once refers to António José Seguro. He considers that he is leaving to the Portuguese who trusted in him “as an independent candidate” a contribution “towards a conscious and informed choice”.
