A possible attack by the United States against Iran may not only be limited to military bases and nuclear installations, but also target leaders of the Iranian regime. The assessment was made by UFRJ professor of International Relations Fernando Brancoli, during an interview with Now CNN.
According to the expert, the last 48 hours indicate that the attacks, if they occur, could target Iranian authorities, especially those linked to the Ayatollah regime.
“What has been said is that there is the possibility of an attack that would not only involve military areas and spaces, but also Iranian leaders”, explained Brancoli.
Regime change
The professor highlighted that a possible counter operation would represent a significant change in American strategy and could have much broader consequences.
“This changes the entire configuration. Changing the Iranian regime today, which is what part of the population has been seeking, asking for and protesting in the streets, would imply a gigantic change in the country,” he stated.
Brancoli mentioned that power structures in Iran have been established since 1979, when the Islamic Revolution occurred, and that a change of this magnitude could lead to a civil war.
