Latin America is experiencing a wave of “new” right, says expert

A Latin America has experienced a growing alternation between left and right governmentsreflecting a crisis of representation that has shaped regional politics. According to the professor of International Politics at Uerj (State University of Rio de Janeiro), Paulo Velascothis oscillation largely reflects the population’s dissatisfaction with the promises not fulfilled by those in power. The statement was made during participation in “WW Special”, by CNN Brazil.

“It is a great difficulty for a president to be re-elected nowadays. The population feels very poorly represented by the incumbent governments, and this ends up leading to a search for alternatives, often in the right-wing opposition”, says Velasco.

A in recent years it has not followed a single ideological pattern, highlights the expert. “The Latin American right does not have the same orientation in terms of party politics. They do not follow the same ideological playbook”, he says, pointing out that, although they share some similarities, such as conservatism in matters of security and values, leaders such as , from Argentina, and Rodrigo Pazfrom Bolivia, have very different approaches.

Velasco observes that, in addition to , another factor driving this new right is the advancement of conservative agendas. “Issues such as public security and a more conservative agenda linked to family and customs have become central in the political debate”, explains the professor.

Velasco, who is also a professor of the MBA in International Relations at FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas), highlights that the change in the profile of the Latin American right reflects not only popular dissatisfaction, but a redefinition of political priorities in the region.

“We are seeing a new right, which does not follow a single model, but is united by a discourse of confronting crime and defending conservative values. This scenario creates a polarized dynamic, in which more and more voters seek quick and more radical answers to issues that directly affect their security and identity”, concludes the professor.
