Lula and Alcolumbre should discuss Messias’ nomination to the STF this week

With the resumption of parliamentary activities, President Lula must meet with the president of Congress, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). One of the issues on the agenda will be the appointment of Jorge Messias to Luis Roberto Barroso’s seat on the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

According to Planalto sources, Alcolumbre continues to be one of the main obstacles to the holding of Jorge Messias’ hearing. Even so, there is optimism regarding the approval of the Attorney General of the Union.

Given this scenario, Jorge Messias must intensify his search for votes. Since last year, he has been talking to senators from different parties in an attempt to raise awareness and obtain the number of votes necessary for approval in the CCJ and the Senate Plenary. The expectation is that the hearing will take place right after Carnival. Until then, the AGU must expand the so-called “kissing hands”, when the nominee for the Supreme Court visits the senators’ offices to present their credentials and show views on the country’s main debates. To be approved, Messias needs at least 41 favorable votes from the 81 senators.

Lula announced the choice of Messias for the Supreme Court at the end of November. But, with initial resistance from Alcolumbre, who preferred the name of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), Planalto did not send the official message to the senators with the minister’s nomination, leaving the discussion for this year.
