Lula expresses support for former president of Chile for UN General Secretariat – 02/02/2026 – Brasília Hoje

The president (PT) expressed support this Monday (2) for the candidacy of former president of Chile Michelle Bachelet for the General Secretariat of the . The body is experiencing a moment of fragility regarding its role in mediating international conflicts since the creation of Donald Trump’s Peace Council.

“In eight decades of history, it is time for the organization to finally be led by a woman,” she wrote on her X account (formerly Twitter).

In the publication, Lula recalled Bachelet’s career as the first woman to preside over Chile, twice, and the first to occupy the positions of Minister of Defense and Health in the country. At the UN, she was the first executive director of UN Women, giving institutional scale to the equality agenda.”

“As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she worked to protect the most vulnerable, advance the recognition of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, and give a voice to those who most need to be heard. Her experience, leadership and commitment to multilateralism accredit her to lead the UN, in an international context marked by conflicts, inequalities and democratic setbacks”, she further wrote.

Once elected, she succeeds the current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, whose term ends on December 31, 2026.
