Samantha Smith (45) she sued in her own words The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) after discovering that that she underwent chemotherapy for six years, which was not necessary at all.
- Samantha Smith underwent chemotherapy for years.
- The investigation confirmed that the treatment had no scientific basis.
Samantha, from Worcestershire, England, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2014 after doctors initially thought it was just stomach problems. After an unexpected discovery, she underwent surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
According to her own words, the patient continued chemotherapy for the next six and a half years according to the recommendation of oncologist Ian Brown and ended the treatment only after his retirement. During this period, she regularly went for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. Finally, in 2021, she found out that she no longer needed treatment.
The treatment should have caused her health problems
A huge shock came when a new specialist took over her case. He informed Samantha that she had significantly exceeded the usual length of chemotherapy. He claimed it should have only lasted six months, not six years. “It was an exhausting process because I was very sick. But I told myself that it was all worth it to get better. So this discovery surprised me immensely. I feel like I’ve lost a part of my life. I couldn’t function normally for a long time and just survived from day to day“, she noted.
The mother of three claims that due to excessive treatment, she had to follow stricter measures during the covid pandemic, as chemotherapy weakened her immunity. “I can’t work properly, I suffer from fatigue and persistent problems with mobility. I can’t even lift my right leg or move my shoulder,” Samantha stated.
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) said it was conducting an internal investigation into the incident. In a written statement, she confirmed that her treatment plan was not supported by scientific evidence. “We have taken measures to prevent similar cases from happening again,” she emphasized. Professor Brown is currently under investigation after it was discovered that another patient was to receive overtreatment for up to 14 years.
