Alcolumbre says that Congress knows its role: ‘relaxing relations’

The president of the National Congress, senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), stated that dissent cannot turn into hatred and that the Legislative Power has the role of easing relations.

“Dissent is part of democracy. Disagreement is part of politics. Debate is part of public life. But we need to state responsibly: dissent cannot turn into hate. Disagreement cannot turn into violence. This National Congress knows exactly its role in this process. When Brazil becomes tense, this is where it recovers”, he stated.

The statements took place on the afternoon of this Monday, 2nd, during the ceremony of the National Congress to inaugurate the legislative work of 2026.

Alcolumbre also said that Congress will remain the legitimate space for political mediation and made a commitment not to increase conflicts, but to help resolve them. He stated that the Legislature will seek dialogue with the other Powers and that this should serve to unite the Brazilian people and never fragment them.

“This is the commitment I assume as President of the National Congress: not to increase conflicts, but to help resolve them; not to encourage extremism, but to build possible consensus; not to run away from the tensions typical of democratic life, but to treat them seriously and with maturity,” he added.

Also present on the occasion were the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), the President of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Edson Fachin, the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and the Chief Minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat, Gleisi Hoffmann.

Continues after advertising

The National Congress resumes work with a calendar of just one semester in 2026, due to the elections. In the opinion of parliamentarians, the shortened deadline makes major reforms difficult during this period and is a factor of tension for projects of electoral interest, both for the government, Centrão and the opposition.
