Cuba is willing to negotiate with Trump but without “conditions” that affect its sovereignty

El Periódico

Cuba is willing to dialogue con USA, without prior conditions, in a position of equalsrespect for our sovereignty, independence y self-determination“he reiterated this Thursday President Miguel Díaz-Canel. During a press conference in which relevant news was expected, the head of state only recalled Havana’s previous positions when asked about relations with Washington that have entered a new stage of friction following the order issued by Donald Trump imposing tariffs on countries that sell oil to the island. Díaz-Canel stressed the “criminal” nature of the “energy blockade” that seeks to “suffocate” Cuba. “There are many things we can work on together, without prejudice,” despite the “asymmetry of relationships,” he told the Republican magnate.

Reality, at the moment, does not seem to offer that possibility. “The enemy has faced persecution of all the paths that are open to Cuba” to obtain crude oil from the moment the flow coming from Venezuelawith the capture and transfer to a US prison of Nicolas Maduro. The world “cannot allow force to crush the multilateralism“. In his opinion, “countries, people, have to understand what is happening: we are facing a political, ideological, cultural, media war on the part of the hegemonic power.”

Díaz-Canel criticized the “annexationist swarm” that is heard from Florida, but he also directed his reproach towards the internal front when he made reference to “those who begin to falter and appear cowardly and weak”.

Cuba must “prepare” for an eventual “guerra” and an increase in the “handling” that seeks to justify it by presenting the island as a promoter of terrorism. “How can we talk about terrorism to a country that has been a victim of it?” He recalled in this regard that before completing his mandate, Joe Biden removed that country from the list of countries that promote it and it was Donald Trump who rectified that decision.

New efforts

“Receiving fuel is a right we have”highlighted the Cuban president, and said that the Government is working so that “the population is less affected” at a time when “there is a lot of fear.” He recognized that there is also a fear in “countries that can supply fuel” to the island. He described it as “regrettable” that a power should assume such an aggressive policy without “a hint of decency” towards “a small nation.” And he added: “Doesn’t this go against the free trade that capitalism defends?”

From the new “restrictions” and blackouts due to lack of energy strong savings measures are coming “that will require efforts”. Díaz-Canel admitted that the announcement causes resentment. “Sacrifice again? They tell us, but what are we going to do, are we going to give up?” In this context, a new economic adjustment is expected.
