Although hydrangeas are considered relatively resistant plants, they require special attention in winter. Not everyone realizes that failure to take appropriate action during this period may result in a lack of flowers in the summer. Therefore, one simple step can decide whether hydrangeas will delight us with their appearance when the warmer days come.
Bouquet hydrangeas are considered frost-resistant plants and do not always require covering for the winter. Of course, this does not apply to young bushes that need additional support in the form of cover. However, in In case of such severe frosts as currently prevailing, it will be necessary to protect also adult specimens.
This especially applies to regions where long-term temperatures of around -15 degrees Celsius are expected. Then we should immediately cover our bouquet hydrangeas. The same rule also applies to all bushes that are not naturally protected and exposed to wind.
Covering bouquet hydrangeas itself is not complicated and does not differ much from wintering other species of shrubs. The first thing we need to do is take care of the roots. To do this, make a small mound, about 30 centimeters high.
Bark, peat, pine cones or old leaves are ideal for covering the roots. When removing the mound in spring, it is worth remembering to replace it with compost, which will be used to sprinkle the hydrangeas. Thanks to this, we will nourish the plants and stimulate the bush to grow vigorously and sprout after winter.

However, it is not only the roots that need covering. This also applies to shoots and stems, which should be protected with agrotextile. This will protect them against low temperatures and strong winds. This is a good protection that not only protects the plant, but also allows sunlight and moisture to pass through, so it will not harm its development.
When covering hydrangeas, it is worth making a small cocoon of agrotextile around the shoots and taking care to protect the top of the specimen in the event of heavy snowfall. Also remember to tie the cover gently at the bottom so that it is not too tight, but at the same time durable.. In the case of bouquet hydrangeas, we can remove them earlier than in garden hydrangeas, i.e. when slight frosts and temperatures closer to 0 degrees Celsius return.
