A high-ranking Russian military officer, Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseev, is hospitalized after being wounded by gunfire in , state media reported today, citing the Investigative Committee.
Alekseev is deputy head of the Central Directorate of the General Staff at the Ministry of Defense, Reuters reports, and, according to AFP, he is a high-ranking official in Russia’s military intelligence service.
When Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin led a short-lived mutiny in June 2023, Alekseev was one of the top officials sent to negotiate with him.
Moscow sees an assassination attempt
“An unidentified person shot repeatedly” Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseev and then fled, the Investigative Committee announced. “The victim is being treated,” according to the same source.
High-ranking Russian military officials have been assassinated since the start of the war in Ukraine. Moscow blames Kiev for these murders.
