The Brazilian automotive market registered 162,342 registrations in the first month of 2026. The total volume consists of 125,159 passenger cars and 37,183 light commercial vehicles. Although the result represents a sharp drop of 39.1% compared to December, the balance indicates a real growth of 1.3% over January 2025.
And once again the came out ahead on the list as the best-selling car in Brazil. The compact pickup truck, which is a light commercial vehicle, registered 10,541 registrations, while the teve 5,741. As a result, the Volks model was the passenger car and Best-selling SUV of the monthrespectively. The numbers are from the consultancy K.Lume.
According to the company, the monthly retraction — 40.6% in and 33.6% in light commercials — is a recurring phenomenon in the first two months. Sector analysts point out that the concentration of fixed expenses at the beginning of the year, such as IPVA, IPTU and school costs, historically diverts families’ capital from the acquisition of durable goods.
With 21 working days, the daily sales average stood at 8,123 units. Despite the 4.3% increase in the daily average compared to 2025, the pace of expansion is lower than the 6.0% recorded in the previous cycle, indicating a moderation in the market’s momentum for this year.
The most technically relevant data in the month was the performance of Chinese manufacturers. While the luxury market fell 3.79%, brands of Chinese origin jumped from 13,901 to 21,652 units — a growth of 55.8%. This movement consolidates the structural change in the vehicle supply in the country, with new technologies and competitive prices putting pressure on traditional brands.
On the other hand, the heavy vehicle segment (trucks and buses) recorded a drop of 25.6% compared to January last year. As the heavy-duty sector is a leading indicator of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and business confidence, the result suggests a cautious scenario for economic activity in 2026.
