The rush or distraction when looking for a place in a shopping center park can turn a shopping trip into an unexpected expense. The Automóvel Clube de Portugal (ACP), a reference in the automotive sector, warns that, although private, these parks are subject to rules that can lead to fines of up to 300 euros, loss of points on your driving license and, in certain cases, immediate towing of the vehicle.
The most problematic places: the reserved ones
Among the most common infractions are seats intended for specific users, such as people with reduced mobility.
Only vehicles that display the Parking Card for People with Disabilities (CEPCD) can occupy these spaces.
The lack of a card makes parking illegal, which can result in fines of 60 to 300 euros, loss of two points on your license and, in more serious cases, suspension from driving for between one and twelve months, in addition to having the vehicle towed.
Differences between parking spaces
Some shopping centers offer wider seats or seats closer to the entrance for pregnant women or families with young children.
Although they do not have legal regulations like those intended for PMCs, the park management can apply sanctions or remove the vehicle if the space is occupied improperly.
Parking in a way that obstructs access is equally serious. Stopping behind another car, blocking emergency exits or loading and unloading areas is prohibited by the Highway Code and can result in large fines and immediate towing. The cost of the fine plus towing and deposit can exceed 400 euros, according to the ACP.
Private parks subject to law
Even though they are private, these parks are considered for public use. When properly signposted, the Highway Code is applicable, and inspection can be carried out by the PSP, GNR or Municipal Police.
Other frequent infractions include occupying two spaces, ignoring horizontal or vertical markings and parking in technical or management areas of the center.
A simple moment of attention when parking can avoid major inconvenience. Checking that the space is appropriate, that it is not reserved and that it does not block access can save you fines, loss of points and the hassle of towing.
It emphasizes that a minimum of care at this time is often enough to avoid unpleasant surprises.
