Airbnb chooses 9 destinations for solo travel and the first on the list is in Portugal

Traveling alone on Valentine’s Day is an option increasingly taken up by those looking for experiences outside the traditional models. The accommodation rental portal, Airbnb, released a list of nine recommended destinations for solo travel on this date, placing the Algarve at the top of the selection.

The list appears in a context of sustained growth in this type of travel. The platform identifies a continuation of the trend for 2026, associated with new patterns of tourist consumption and more individualized demand.

Algarve leads the European list

According to the same source, the Algarve occupies first place thanks to the diversity of landscapes and the variety of activities available along the coast. The cliffs, small coves and direct contact with the sea are highlighted as central factors for those traveling alone.

The same portal also states that the region allows surfing, trails along the ocean, exploring coastal caves and visiting cities, such as Lagos, Tavira or Albufeira, whilst maintaining an accessible location within the Iberian Peninsula.

Southern Spain as a nearby alternative

Soon after comes the Costa del Sol, in Spain. According to the same source, the mild climate throughout the year and the extensive beaches make this region one of the preferred options for solo getaways. The selection highlights experiences such as yoga sessions by the sea, walks through natural gorges and visits to locations such as Marbella, Nerja or Mijas, combining rest and physical activity.

Among destinations outside Europe, the Airbnb platform includes the Florida Cayos. This archipelago is distinguished by its turquoise waters, streets lined with palm trees and an environment associated with a more relaxed pace of life.

Idyllwild, in California, appears as an option for those who prefer the mountains. The same source explains that the destination offers trails in pine forests and experiences linked to well-being, such as yoga or sauna sessions, available through the platform.

Cold, nature and winter experiences

The list also includes Inverness, in Scotland. The city attracts travelers interested in historical heritage, castles and natural landscapes, including Loch Ness and the Highlands.

Isère, in the French Alps, is presented as a destination for those looking for a Valentine’s Day in a snowy environment. According to the same source, the region brings together alpine villages and ski resorts such as Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d’Huez or Chamrousse.

From the Caribbean to the Arctic and demand data

La Altagracia, in the Dominican Republic, completes the set of warm-weather destinations, combining beaches, local culture and boat trips. Tromsø, in Norway, closes the list, standing out for observing the aurora borealis and exploring fjords above the Arctic Circle.

The platform associates these choices with a broader context of travel linked to major events. It is known that 65% of the most popular dates and cities for 2026 coincide with cultural, sporting and musical events, such as Carnival, international festivals, the Winter Olympic Games and the Football World Cup, reinforcing the consolidation of solo travel.
