A cinema-worthy attack occurred this Monday morning on a motorway in the Puglia region, in southern Italy, when an organized gang attempted to rob an armored car in broad daylight, using a carefully planned ambush.
According to the Italian press, around six armed men set fire to a car in the middle of the SS 613 road, between Lecce and Brindisi, near the Tuturano exit, using the burning vehicle as a barricade to force an armored car to stop. The target belonged to the Battistolli security company.
Some of the suspects pretended to be police officers, using vehicles with blue lights, which allowed them to block the highway and set up the attack scene. The action was recorded in videos that quickly began to circulate on social media.
The situation escalated when the attackers exchanged fire with the Italian police, the Carabinieri, who quickly arrived at the scene. According to the L’Unione Sarda portal, one of the shots hit the windshield of a police vehicle.
In their attempt to escape, the suspects also stole cars from drivers who were traveling in the area. Authorities confirmed the arrest of two individuals. There is no record of deaths or injuries.
Attack on armored vehicles with bombs and machine guns among terrified motorists and it is not the first time. Minister Piantedosi is busy doing interviews and not fighting crime, while in Italy robberies and home thefts have increased and the police are understaffed.
