At least ten people died this Tuesday when a person shot at a school in the town of Tumbler Ridge, in western Mexico, according to police.
Among the deceased is the alleged perpetrator of the shooting. Six of the dead were located inside the school while two other bodies were found in a home. There are local media that speculate that they could be relatives of the suspect, but there is no official confirmation.
Another person died while being transported to a hospital.
Authorities also said that around 25 people are being treated for injuries at the local medical center and that two others have been evacuated by helicopter, with extremely serious injuries.
They also added that police officers are searching homes and properties in the town, located about 1,150 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, to verify that there are no more victims and have ruled out other suspects.
The alleged perpetrator of the massacre was located inside the school dead as a result of self-inflicted wounds. The authorities omitted to give details about the identity or ages of the people killed in the shooting at the moment, but they do not rule out students and faculty members among the dead.
Safe evacuation
The Canadian Mounted Police explained in a statement that around 1:20 p.m. local time (20:20 GMT) they began to receive information about the shooting at Tumbler Ridge High School, a town in the interior of the province of British Columbia and with a population of about 2,400 people, which implies that the shooting will have a strong impact on the small community, pending the identities of the victims being revealed.
“As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located several victims. A person believed to be the shooter was also found dead with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury,” the Mounties said.
“All students and staff members remaining at the center were safely evacuated,” the statement added.
The Canadian Prime Minister, said he was “devastated” by the shooting and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
“I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones in these acts of violence,” Carney said in a message on X.
“Our ability to come together in times of crisis is what is best about our country: our empathy, our unity and our compassion,” Carney recalled.
