Fonseca, aged 19, had won his first ATP title in February 2025 on the clay courts of Buenos Aires
Brazilian João Fonseca, number 33 in the world and current champion of the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, was eliminated from the Argentine tournament on his debut, after losing this Wednesday (11) to Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (71st) in the second round.
In an exciting and fierce match, Tabilo defeated the Rio native with scores of 6-3, 3-6 and 7-5 in two hours and 24 minutes on the central court of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. Fonseca, 19 years old, had won his first ATP title in February 2025 on the clay courts of Buenos Aires and returned to the Argentine capital to try for his second title.
However, with Wednesday’s surprising defeat, he will lose several points which will cause him to fall in the world rankings. Back problems complicated the start of the year for João Fonseca, forcing him to withdraw from tournaments in Brisbane and Adelaide and focus on being ready for the Australian Open.
But he ended up losing in the first round in Melbourne to American Eliot Spizzirri. The next objective is the Rio Open, in his homeland, scheduled to take place from February 16th to 22nd.
