The EU deploys its “anti-drone” shield: rapid response teams to protect airports and borders

Over the last few months, there have been numerous and probe balloons (probably of Russian origin) that have violated the airspace of European Union countries such as Poland, Germany, Lithuania or Romania.

Given this threat to air safety that poses a serious risk to critical infrastructures such as, The EU has announced the deployment of an action plan with which you are looking establish an “anti-drone” shield on European borders.

As the European Commission has reported in a , the main priorities of this plan are going to be “improve preparedness, stimulate detection capabilities, coordinate responses and strengthen the EU’s defense capacity.”

In this sense, the European Commission has announced that it is going to propose the implementation of “a security package regarding drones in order to renew current regulations on civil aerial drones and adapt them to new security realities.

This security package will include “measures on a coordinated risk assessment to protect technology supply chains for both drones and counter-drone systems, along with creation of an ‘EU trusted drones’ label that identifies safe equipment on the market”.

The importance of technological development

On the other hand, the European Commission has indicated that a new approach related to the technological development and the fast increase in industrial production. We will work on the following aspects:

  • A coordinated civil and military industrial mapping to attract investment and encourage innovation and interoperability.
  • Reinforcement of anti-drone defense testing capacity thanks to a new EU Anti-Drone Center of Excellence and promotion of a certification system for anti-drone defense systems.
  • Creation of a Drone and Antidrone Sector Forum to promote dialogue with industrial agents, with a view to increasing production.

Improved response capability to enemy drone incursion

Likewise, the European Commission has indicated that it “will support the development of sovereign European ‘command and control’ systems driven by artificial intelligence and will study the possibility of create emergency rapid response anti-drone teams for greater solidarity between Member States.”

Also with the aim of improving the European response capacity to the incursion of enemy drones, the European Commission has expressed itself in favor of the holding an annual large-scale European anti-drone defense exercise to test cross-border cooperation and civil-military synergies.
