Chairman of the non-parliamentary opposition party TISZA Péter Magyar on Thursday publicly drew attention to the allegedly prepared discredit campaign of the governing Fidesz partywhich according to him should include publishing a secretly recorded intimate video. Magyar admitted that in the summer of 2024 he was in an apartment where he was seduced by an ex-girlfriend, adding that he did not realize at the time that it could be an intelligence game. The correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it.
The leader of the opposition party went on to say on Facebook that there were unknown persons in the given Budapest apartment and that apart from alcohol there were also drugs, but he did not consume any of it. “I will not give Viktor Orbán the opportunity to divert attention from the real problems for weeks,” added Magyar, who characterized this move as a desperate attempt by the government to eliminate him politically and to cover the country’s economic and social problems with Russian-style news coverage.
Campaigning is heating up ahead of parliamentary elections due on April 12, with opinion polls suggesting a close fight between Magyar’s TISZA party and Prime Minister Orbán’s Fidesz. “It turned out that Péter Magyar lives a double life: he shows one face in public and another at night. He confessed. He is a two-faced liar,” responded Fidesz communications director Tamás Menczer.
“In the past, during the campaigns, we waited to see if Gyula Horn would sit down for a debate with Viktor Orbán, or what new promises the parties would make,” noted political scientist Gábor Török on Facebook, according to whom such a step opens a completely new chapter in election campaigns. According to the analyst, such a matter cannot remain without consequences for the government as well. It is obvious that such a step could not have taken place without Orbán’s consent.
