Master: Mendonça is a neutral figure and can show protagonism, says analyst

The minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), André Mendonça, new rapporteur of the Master Case, represents a neutral figure who can take advantage of the opportunity to show leadership in the conduct of the process, according to the assessment of the Judiciary analyst at JOTA, Flávia Maia, during participation in the WW this Thursday (12).

Maia highlighted that he is not yet linked to any of the political groups that exist within the STF, which puts him in a different position to conduct the case.

“He is still a somewhat neutral figure and I think there is a great possibility of him showing a leading role,” he said.

The analyst highlighted that, although Mendonça has already reported important cases, such as processes related to the INSS and leniency agreements, he has not yet had a major spotlight on the national legal scene. The Master Case may represent that opportunity for affirmation in court.

Concern about transparency

Flávia Maia also noted that the minister has shown concern about his public image.

“This week he posted on social media, before knowing that he would be the rapporteur of this case, saying that all the profits he makes with the educational entity he participates in will be donated”, commented the analyst, indicating that Mendonça seems to be aware of the perception of transparency.

The analyst currently sees no signs that Mendonça is articulating any type of political agreement in the case, but rather that he must follow normal investigation procedures.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for him to show why he came here, including to be, suddenly, a different force from the others that are here”, concluded Flávia Maia, suggesting that the minister can use the case to establish his own position in court.
