Be sure not to throw away the old Velcro. It is an excellent household tool

Let’s assume that in every household there is an old piece of clothing, a backpack or a broken case that has reached the end of its life, but still has a functional Velcro fastener on it. We can throw away such an unnecessary thing, or at least use a part of it with a new idea. For example, Velcro.

While most of us throw these things away without a second thought, experienced advocates of smart solutions know that precisely that “toothy” strip is literally a treasure for the household. Believe me, it can solve several minor household inconveniences that we would have struggled with for a long time without it. It’s not just practical switching on, but thanks to the structure of small but very effective hooks, it works as a perfect mechanical tool. If we give it a second chance, it will save a lot of money on lint removers, or a lot of time in the maintenance of hygiene products. Let’s take a closer look at his abilities.

How to clean a hair brush?

Any woman with hair that’s just a little bit longer will attest to how annoying cleaning a hairbrush can be. Although we pull out the biggest “tufts”, fine hairs still remain between the bristles, but also dust and residues of hairspray and others, which are very difficult to remove. It is at this point that we can call in the old retired velcro (the rougher half with the hooks, of course) to help. Do you have it handy? Great. So now you just need to pass the zip strip between the rows of brush bristles a few times and you will immediately see the difference. The tiny hooks of the zipper pack all the seemingly unremovable dirt and gray clumps of dust, which you would otherwise have to painstakingly mine with a needle or tweezers. It will be done in a few seconds – and in the remaining time you can perhaps read the next chapter of an interesting novel.

Lint will be a thing of the past

In a similarly ingenious way, old velcro can be used to save favorite wardrobe items that are clearly showing that their best months (or years) are behind them. Sweaters, sweatshirts or woolen coats have an unpleasant tendency to create unsightly piles over time, of course especially in places where there is friction. Instead of buying electric lint removers, which often work on the basis of blades and can cut through delicate knitwear, this time we can try just that piece of velcro. By gently (but really gently) moving the zipper hook over the affected area, the lint will be caught and gently “brushed” out of the surface of the fabric. It is a suitable solution for quickly adjusting clothes just before leaving the house, when we need to look perfect in a few seconds.

Remove pet hair

But the creative use of velcro does not end with hairbrushes and sweaters. It is also invaluable for cleaning other surfaces that catch threads and pet hair. If you have a furry pet at home, then you know exactly what we are talking about. You can imagine from your own experience how difficult it is in the car or from the upholstery of the chairs, where the vacuum cleaner often fails. Animal hair has the uncanny ability to stick in such a way that it doesn’t give us much of a chance to win. But a piece of velcro stuck to a wooden block creates an improvised, but extremely powerful textile brush. The hooks penetrate deep into the structure of the fabric and pull out even the deeper embedded hairs, which can then be easily pulled out of the zipper by hand.

Don’t throw away – recycle!

For those of us who like to create or tinker, old Velcro offers advantages for organizing all sorts of tools and materials. If you have a longer strip left, you can use it to tame the ever-tangling cables. In addition, it is reusable and adjustable, unlike disposable drawstrings. In short, the old Velcro is proof that the best tools don’t have to be expensive or technologically complex. Next time you’re sorting through old things, try to see if there’s a bit of this versatile helper left on them. You never know when you will appreciate its power.
