It’s only February, but there are already two men with a direct entry into the list of the most memorable political communications of 2026, and they couldn’t be more different: Mark Carney and .
Let’s start with the first. The Prime Minister of , in his historic speech in Davos in January, eloquently explained to the world that the old rules-based world order has gone to hell and that it is time to wake up and react. Carney made it clear that worse than not having projects is not having principles or courage to defend them. Yes, the powerful have strength, but the weakest have the strength of their values.
His message was blunt. He argued that, together, smaller nations can stand up to a great power. The proposal is clear: a coalition of wills between countries with common interests and ideals to build something “bigger, better, stronger and fairer”.
February arrived and viewers from the four corners of the planet saw it. What the Puerto Rican did was much more than a sensual Latin show – it was a brutal political statement. And the way political statements work best: directly reaching the heart, through joy (worth checking out). It is worth remembering that it was acquired in 1898 and is not independent. Puerto Ricans are Americans and can travel in , but they do not vote for the Presidency nor have full representation in Congress. It’s as if they were second-class citizens in a “modern” colony.
With this background, every detail was thought out by the singer to convey an elementary idea: unity is strength. And may the strength lie not with Trump’s abominable and self-absorbed “America”, but with this America imagined by Bad Bunny – multicultural, where all the countries on the continent fit, from the extreme south of Chile to the extreme north, in Canada. On the screen, in bold letters, the most memorable phrase of this utterance: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.” Thank you, Benito, it was beautiful.
That same night, António José Seguro presidential elections in . No, President-elect Seguro didn’t give a history-making victory speech (and I’m almost willing to bet a little finger that you never will). Its strength is different, the security of the most absolute normality. He benefits from the abnormality of times and opponents.
Seguro was elected on his own merit, because as a democratic socialist he managed to unite around him people with very different ideologies, from the radical left to the moderate right (communists, modern left, liberals, social democrats) and thus obtain 66% of the votes. But he was also elected due to the obvious demerit of his only rival, André Ventura, the man on the radical right who exalts and proposes taking the country back to the past, to conservative authoritarianism. His victory was a declaration of the Portuguese’s love for moderation.
What does Seguro have in common with Bad Bunny and Mark Carney? The idea of joining forces against a common enemy. If the three of them walked into a bar, no matter how different they were, I’m sure they would understand each other.
